AIR FILES LOUNGE is an html based platform created to access digitized version of Air Files Collection.

AIR FILES COLLECTION Air Files is a collection of images, sounds and texts made at the Ohio State University, 2000-2001. The collection is made of both the originally made and found objects that thematically correspond to the themes of airplanes and airports. In broader sense, it addresses discourses of art, science, travel, contemporary cultures, power, politics etc.
Three major subsets of the collection are defined by media: image, sound and text. Within each section there is a number of subsets determined by the topic and character. All together there are 32 folders and 600 files in the collection. The nature of all subsets is that they operate as individual units without hierarchy between them. For that reason, there is no the beginning or end of the collection. A viewer can browse the Air Files collection randomly or based on an arbitrary system of browsing such as alphabetical, chronological or aesthetic hierarchy.
The production of this collection was conducted as a research. It is an investigation of art activity as an experimental research method and alternative science. Through out this process, the legitimization of both science and art becomes an issue. This is greatly influenced and inspired by my personal position of being a Croat at an American University. The legitimization of science and labor as well as art within capitalism significantly differs from the socialist environment that I grew up in. The personal tone of the text in certain chapters acknowledges that fact more directly, while theoretical sections try to take a more objective stand and build the argument obeying the structure of the discourse.

AIR FILES is accessible in three ways:
(1) Air Files Gallery Presentation with images transferred on slides, text printed on pamphlet and slides, sound played from CD player;
(2) Air Files CD Rom with images, texts and sounds being accessible in digital format;
(3) separate Air Files projects: Air Files catalogue, Air Text Files book, slides, CDs. The, gallery presentation helps to introduce the project and initialize the contact with the public, while the former two approaches are more in the spirit of the collection as they don’t suggest any system of browsing.

Air Files Lounge was originally made for CD-ROM viewing. This version has been appropriated for the Web and changed: to shorten the download time, the compression of images was increased and therefore their quality lowered; the database and highlights selection originally contained audio files which are left out here.
